Study Finds Home-Based Businesses Offer Significant Tech-Purchasing Power
By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Once upon a time, the concept of a home-based business often brought to mind the housewife toting plastic containers and make-up solutions door to door. While this type of business proved to be very profitable for some, it also had a limited appeal.

This perception has been quickly changing as home-based businesses have spread into various industries, with a widespread demographic as owners. And, as the U.S. economy is facing a possible recession, the silver lining for the upcoming buying season may come from the tech-purchasing power of U.S. home-based businesses

A recent study by AMI-Partners, a consulting and research firm, found that spending on IT and telecom products and services by U.S. home-based businesses (HBBs) is expected to reach approximately $52 billion.

The home-based business is rapidly becoming a significant sector that vendors need to pay attention to," says Antara Jaitly, Senior Analyst at AMI, in a Thursday statement. "More people may look to operating a home-based business as a means to supplement their income or fulfill personal aspirations."

According to Jaitly, "The approximately 15 million PC-owning U.S. Home Based Businesses are expected to drive $32.7 billion in IT spending during 2007 with a projected increase to around $35 billion in 2008 and $19 billion in telecom-related spending in 2007 which is forecasted to increase to $19.5 during 2008."

Robert Takacs, Vice President at AMI, also noted in Thursday's statement: "These Home Based Businesses plan to spend on a wide array of hardware, software and telecom-related products and services ranging from PDAs and smart phones to PCs, printers, software applications, security and storage products and high-speed broadband services."

Vendors including HP, Microsoft and Dell tend to resonate well with these Home Based Businesses owners. Google (News - Alert) also scored high marks in online services. For those utilizing the retail outlet for PC purchases, retailers such as Best Buy, Staples and Office Depot/Max were mentioned. Almost one out of four Home Based Businesses buy their PCs directly from the manufacturer.

The Home Based Business market in the U.S. has seen a proliferation of service-oriented businesses. The Internet has played a pivotal role, spurring an increase in the use of websites and Internet-based electronic marketplaces such as eBay ( News - Alert),which have enabled small service-focused home based businesses to flourish.

According to the AMI study, the average U.S. Home Based Business owner is highly educated, with over 3 in 5 having at least a college undergraduate degree. These individuals tend to be in their late forties and have been in business for about seven years. More than four in ten mentioned that their Home Based Business attributed to more than half of their total annual household income.

"With median Home Based Business annual revenues equaling $62,000, HBB revenues are 30% more affluent than the median U.S. household income of $48,200," says Jaitly.

According to Takacs, "Another noteworthy finding is that a majority of Home Based Businessess were started as a result of lifestyle choices. We see four distinct formation kernels driving Home Based Business creation. These reflect the mindset of the founder, define Home Based Business growth goals and illuminate distinct IT spending choices."

"There is a distinct Home Based Business psyche which is a synthesis of the owner profile, buying power and formation drivers. For marketers, understanding this psyche is critical to effectively targeting this segment," Takacs added.

With the technologies available to individuals today, it is likely that the U.S.-based Home Base Business market will continue to grow and play a pivotal role in the technology market. As a result, many companies will do well to focus certain aspects of their strategies on targeting this sector and providing the solutions they need to become and remain successful.

The Best Tax Shelter in the U.S.A.

A home-based business is the best tax shelterin America and is the best way for the average woman to take advantage of these tax breaks. By taking advantage of the tax breaks available to you, you can keep more of your income, even if your business is not producing a profit! Did you know that even if you do NOT make a dime, you will still be able to come away with an extra $5000 in your pocket at the end of year?

There are a few things you can do in order to have everything in place for your home based business before tax time. It is best to be prepared from the very beginning in order to avoid the frustration when it is time to do your taxes. If you follow these important tips, they will make this coming tax season a breeze for you.

1. Set up business accounts

From the get go set up separate accounts for your personal and business expenses. It's important to set up a business checking account and a business savings in order to put money aside for taxes every month. This helps you save time with keeping track of your business expenses, plus you will not put yourself in a position of debt. Your goal for having a home business is to get out of debt, not get deeper into debt.

2. Keep records

You don't want to put yourself in a position to have to prove anything to the IRS. Keep your receipts for all of your business expenses. There are plenty of ways that you can keep track of your receipts. Put all of them in one place and schedule time to input them into a software program like Quick Books. If you have a spreadsheet, such as Microsoft Excel, you can effectively keep track of all of your receipts.

3. Educate yourself about taxes

The best place to get educated about taxes is the IRS. There is a wealth of information on their website concerning all tax laws and deductions to keep you up to date with your home based business. Set aside time every week and research certain topics about taxes and how they intertwine with your home based business. For example some business owners need their taxes filed by March 15th. That's why it is wise to hire an accountant to take care of these issues.

4. Find a tax professional

Even though you are keeping records of your home based business expenses throughout the year, don't attempt to file your taxes without a tax professional. Plus you don't want Uncle Sam knocking at your door. It was easier to file taxes when you were an employee, so it is best to find an accountant. Make sure to shop around for an affordable and knowledgeable accountant to look for the best tax breaks for you and your family.

If you are not currently working out of the comfort of your home, then you are losing out on extra cash for your household. Can you imagine what your bank account will look like in 2 to 4 years by supplementing your income, without sacrificing time away from your family?

If you are willing to commit to at least 10 hours per week in the comfort of your home, then you can enjoy all of the tax advantages of having a home based business. You will be able to deduct your expenses like your, electric bill, telephone bill, gas mileage, your square footage of your home and so much more.

It's not difficult to do, especially if you have a strong desire to get out of debt, spend more time with your family, or want to have a sizable nest in your golden years. It is never too late to start your own home based business venture. Become the most you can be and live the life you and your family deserve instead of just settling for less. What is holding you back?

AMI-Partners: U.S. Home-Based Business Market— A Sleeping Giant
Offers $52 Billion Market for IT and Telecom Vendors

Provides Potential Silver Lining Amidst Talk of Recession

NEW YORK--( BUSINESS WIRE)--With the U.S. economy teetering on a possible recession, one silver lining for the upcoming buying season is likely to come from an unexpected source: the tech-purchasing power of U.S. home-based businesses.

According to a recent global study by AMI-Partners, a leading consulting and research firm, spending on IT and telecom products and services by U.S. home-based businesses (HBBs) is expected to reach approximately $52 billion. The Internet has played a pivotal role, spurring an increase in the use of websites and Internet-based electronic marketplaces such as eBay, which have enabled small service-focused businesses – as varied as consulting, staffing, travel, and catering – to flourish.

Who is the Home-Based Business Owner?

Interestingly, the AMI study reveals that the average U.S. HBB is highly educated, with over 3 in 5 having at least a college undergraduate degree. These HBB owners are typically in their late forties, having been in business for about 7 years. Over 4 in 10 mentioned that their HBB attributed to more than half of their total annual household income. There is a distinct Home Based Business psyche which is a synthesis of the owner profile, buying power and formation drivers. For marketers, understanding this psyche is critical to effectively targeting this segment. "

The groundbreaking global HBB study was conducted over several thousand households across countries in North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia-Pacific regions. The study complements AMI 's long-standing coverage of the Global SMB market and provides actionable tactical and strategic insights for successfully targeting the HBB market – encompassing current adoption and future plans, attitudes, drivers, buying behavior, purchase outlets, market segmentation and related factors.

ATLANTA: Ryan Masters, a Milwaukee contractor who spends $400,000 a year on tools and building materials, abandoned Home Depot for Lowe's eight years ago because of poor service.

"When I shop there it's because of convenience more than anything," he said, referring to Home Depot. "The people who work there generally aren't very helpful. You're almost better off looking it up on the Internet."

Now, Frank Blake, who took over as the chief executive of Home Depot in January after the retailer, based in Atlanta, ousted Robert Nardelli, is staking his success - and that of the retailer's languishing shares - on winning back contractors like Masters, who provide as much as 40 percent of the company's $79 billion in annual sales.

"When a company quits worrying about the next store and starts worrying about the next customer, good things often happen to the stock," said Dan Poole, an asset manager at National City Bank in Cleveland.

Blake's strategic shift is a reason to buy Home Depot stock, analysts say, even as it is headed for the first three-year losing streak in its 25-year history. The shares will gain 34 percent over the next year, according to the average of analysts' estimates collected by Bloomberg.

So says Dick Lynch, chief technology officer of Verizon (NYSE:VZ) Wireless, the nation's second-biggest mobile phone company.

Verizon just happens to be laying the ground work to launch a
next-generation wireless broadband service in about 2010. That
fourth-generation, or 4G, broadband network will be geared to social networkers, among others.  "What we see is the typical person today at Facebook or YouTube, or any social networking site, being the major wireless user of the future," Lynch said.

Home-spun business might not be 'as sexy' as international investment, but in the longer term it's more likely to be sustainable than global names such as Seagate within Northern Ireland's economy.

As a DUP MLA, and an East Belfast councillor, who is also a member of the Assembly's Enterprise Trade and Investment Committee, I have firm views on this issue. I believe the heavily subsidized 900 jobs that are now to be lost in with the closure of Seagate's Limavady plant could have been translated as several thousand jobs that would remain permanently within Northern Ireland, given a different investment approach.

Home-based businesses employ almost a third of the total workforce and are growing in number as mums, young people and the over-50s seek more control over their lifestyles.
A report by consultancy Enterprise Nation for BT said these home-based businesses were ambitious, with all the 1,600 firms that took part in an online poll saying they planned to grow their sales this year.  But almost three-quarters said they would rather outsource new work than recruit a full-time employee.

A REPORT is calling for greater support and recognition for home businesses in Wales.  The Home Business Report, compiled by home business resource Enterprise Nation, has drawn up a 10-point blueprint which it believes, if adopted, will boost the Welsh economy and bring increased benefits to the environment and society.  The BT-sponsored report, unveiled at the launch of Small Business Week 2007, reveals that the home has now become the most popular business start-up location – accounting for more than 60% of all start-ups.  Posted on Mon, Oct. 29, 2007 10:15 PM

Home base: Inspirion

Inspirion, Olathe
Owner: Jennifer Granger
The business: Inspirion is an event-planning business that assists with weddings and social and corporate events.
Web site: www. inspirionevents.com
Employees:  One — an additional event planner who handles much of the creative detail work.
Established: April

Biggest challenge:  Some clients are uncomfortable meeting at a residential rather than a commercial setting, Granger said.  Solution: Granger goes to her clients. “We find it is much more convenient for them anyway, and most of them don’t even know we’re a home-based business,” Granger said.  Rewards: The freedom to explore creatively on behalf of clients is what Granger likes best about her business.  Strengths: “We are genuinely sincere in our efforts to make each event successful,” Granger said.  Advice for others: “The hardest thing to do is to stop working at the end of the day when there is so much to be done and the office is so close,” Granger said. She recommends establishing a space and a schedule specifically for working.

Many people struggle to make money with their home based business, especially their Coastal Vacations Club businesses.
Most of the time, it is self emposed struggle. People are too busy being busy, cleaning their desks, organizing their lead lists, alphabetizing thier leads, or sorting their leads by state, and all kinds of other excuses prevent people from making good money from home.

Some people don’t find success in home based businesses, especially Coastal Vacations because of FEAR. There is a fear of talking to strangers, a fear of being rejected, and a fear of failure. All of these fears are certainly real to the home based business entrepreneur, but in reality, they should not hold a person back from success.
